Usability of Legacy p2p Multicast in Multihop Ad Hoc Networks: An Experimental Study

چکیده
There has recently been an increasing interest in convergence of p2p and ad hoc network research. Actually, p2p systems and multihop ad hoc networks share similar features, such as self-organisation, decentralisation, self-healing, and so forth. It is thus interesting to understand if p2p systems designed for the wired Internet are suitable also for ad hoc networks and, if they are not, in which direction they should be improved. In this paper, we report our experience in running p2p applications in real multihop ad hoc network testbeds. Specifically, we used group-communication applications that require p2p systems made up of an overlay network and a p2p multicast protocol. In this paper, we present experimental results specifically related to the performance of a well-known p2p shared-tree multicast protocol (Scribe). Our results show that such a solution is far from being efficient on ad hoc networks. We emphasize that the structured multicast approach is one of the main causes of inefficiency, and suggest that stateless solutions could be preferable.

P2P multicast for pervasive ad hoc networks
During the last few years, the proliferation of miniaturised devices with networking capabilities has provided the technological grounds for pervasive networking environments. It is not visionary to foresee a world of pervasive devices embedded in the environment interacting between them, and with those carried by users, via wireless communications. In addition, fostered by the diffusion of sma...
متن کاملOn-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol in Multihop Wireless Mobile Networks
An ad hoc network is a dynamically reconfigurable wireless network with no fixed infrastructure or central administration. Each host is mobile and must act as a router. Routing and multicasting protocols in ad hoc networks are faced with the challenge of delivering data to destinations through multihop routes in the presence of node movements and topology changes. This paper presents the On-Dem...
متن کاملReal-time multicast for wireless multihop networks
Wireless multicast for multihop ad-hoc networks ensures that the same information is delivered efficiently to multiple recipients simultaneously. However, existing protocols ignore the real-time nature of many wireless applications such as real-time video and audio communications in mesh and ad-hoc networks. Further, devices in such networks are typically energy-constrained, i.e., multicast pro...
متن کاملOn Demand Multicast Routing Protocol for Mobile Adhoc Networks
In This paper presents a novel multicast routing protocol for mobile ad hoc wireless networks. The protocol, termed ODMRP (On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol), is a mesh-based, rather than a conventional treebased, multicast scheme and uses a forwarding group concept (only a subset of nodes forwards the multicast packets via scoped flooding). It applies on-demand procedures to dynamically bui...
متن کاملSecure Multicast over Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
In this paper we address the problem of secure multicast of data streams over a multihop wireless ad hoc network. We propose a key management protocol that aims at solving problems that are specific to ad hoc networks such as mobility, unreliable links, and multihop communication cost. The main idea is to have group members actively participate to the multicast group security therefore reducing...
